What would happen if a pregnant woman gives birth in the United Nations building? What nationality would he be
Hehe, I asked this to the guide and she was astonished... It is a funny thing, because the land occupied by the United Nations headquarters is international territory, it has the extraterritoriality status like embassys have. Actually is no country and all at the same time... hohoho. Of course if the parent's country citizenship is established by "jus sanguinis", the baby would have parent's citizenship... and diplomatics will want to finish quicky this mess this with that... B U T what if their parents comes from a country where practices "jus solis"... What nationality the baby would be? From all countries? All members? From the 5 permanent members of the council? Would he be the first and real International baby? The global baby? hahaha, it is so hilarious this idea that I'm thinking of doing this... What do you think folks? HEY remember what I said. The UN territory is not longer US soil. It is like an embassy, but a peculiar one since is a international one. So, it doesn't matter if the building is in NY, the UN building is NOT in the US. SO Legally, it is not bound by the US Constitution, US laws, US Hotdogs, US whatevers. This is not an opinion, it is a fact. So Don't say he would be an american. And if you don't know the difference between "Jus Solis", "Jus Sanguinis", don't say he would have his parents nationality... And please read what I wrote twice...

- He'd be a "mutt" Serious, His birth citizenship is in that exact country he is born. And at the same time, his legal citizenship is his parents present citizenship. all true, trust me, it happened to me
- American. The United Nations building is in New York and is on soverign American territory. The 13th Amendment of the US Constitution.
- They get to decide but it could be president.
- Antarctic, of course!!
- he would have to be crowned emperor of the galaxy
- Citizen of Earth :)
- I would think by definition the baby would be the nationality of his or her parents but might be entitled to claim U.S. citizenship based on the Constitution. The U.N. building IS on U.S. soil.
- hohoho is right. my guess would be that the baby receives citizenship from his parents' country. or, perhaps it would default to whatever place "surrounds" the UN building. good idea though. you should do it. we need more people to check the "miscellaneous" box.
- They have whats called double citizenship , my Friend daughters were born in Japan , they had to go to the American embassy in front of a legal judge of both country's and denounce there Japanese citizenship, or his daughters were going to be recruited at the age of 12 for the military , so that's what happens, when there on foreign soil
- the u.n building premises enjoys diplomatic immunity but is located on u.s.a soil and therefore the child i think should have a u.s.a citizenship as the law says.....for example if there is a fire wouldn't the local authorities extinguish it or would the international forces be called in???????
- seeing it would be born in the united nation building i think it should be possible to choose any nationality available
- He'd be the first uni-baby. All I know is I feel sorry for him already. Can you imagine the first thing he sees is a bunch of burly men fighting with each other? He'll have to grow up believing in God, Allah, budda while practicing to be an atheist!
- He'd be powerless.. :)
- The U.N. would call an emergency meeting, then go in the other room and flip a coin between all nations until it is settled. Then the parents would be offered citizenship in that country. Best 2 out of 3. Or would there be some sort of raffle or auction?! : ) Verrrrrrry interesting.
- Hey folks did you read what this guy wrote above? You are answering things he already thought ahead. IT DOESN'T MATTER THAT THE UNITED NATIONS HQ IS ON NEW YORK, THE AMERICAN SOIL. As he states before it has the Extraterritoriality status like embassys have. If you live in Congo and have your kid in an US embassy, that baby is american. If a baby is born in the UN who knows what happens. SECONDLY, AS Daniel K forseen, THE KID ONLY CAN HAVE HIS PARENTS NATIONALITY IF IN THEIR COUNTRY CITIZENSHIP IS ATTRIBUTED AT BIRTH BY "JUS SANGUINIS", it means "right of blood". It is a legal way to establish nationality. IF they are ruled by "JUS SOLI", "right of land", the kid's nationality is of the nation he was born. ****** Will you guys read before answering? ****** And danny, I don't have a clue, it is interesting question and honestly I don't think you'll find the answer here...
- The UN building is in NY, therefore the kid would be an american.
- He's an earthling.
- Too bad the disallowed Pluto...he could have claimed political asylum.
- maybe it would depend on what OFFICE he was born in, the country the office belong to would be his nationality? If born in a common area....... Very interesting question.
- Excellent question! I work for the UN in NY HQ and had never though about it! And you and Alice_arg are totally right - UNHQ NY is not US soil. It is international soil. US law enforcement and other agencies can only enter if authorized and escorted. But UN and host nation agencies relations are excellent! My best guess would be the child would be certainly be given the right to have an US citizenship. It is because in such a case the UN medical service would request assistance from the local medical services. And knowing life the child would also get an UN honor citizenship. Thank for such an incredible question! I will try to get an answer from some people more informed!
